American Badminton Association

Vision, Mission, and Strategic Positioning

Vision

To build a thriving, accessible, and sustainable badminton ecosystem in the United States—where clubs are empowered, organizers are supported, athletes are developed at every level, and opportunities to play and compete are widely available nationwide.

Mission

The American Badminton Association (ABA) exists to accelerate the growth and development of badminton by equipping clubs, organizers, coaches, and athletes with modern tools, shared infrastructure, education, and systems that expand participation, elevate competition quality, and create clear pathways from grassroots play to international excellence.

Strategic Positioning

ABA is a badminton-first, nonprofit resource hub designed to strengthen the foundation of the sport by enabling the people who already drive it. Rather than replacing existing organizations or centralizing control, ABA focuses on reducing friction, increasing opportunity, and professionalizing the systems that support badminton at the local, regional, and national levels.

ABA operates alongside existing governing bodies, complementing their work by addressing areas where clubs, organizers, and athletes lack scalable tools, consistent standards, and development pathways.

The Problem ABA Addresses

Badminton in the United States is sustained largely by individual clubs and passionate volunteers, yet those stakeholders are provided with limited infrastructure, fragmented guidance, and few scalable resources to proactively grow the sport.

As a result:

Participation growth is reactive rather than intentional
Organizers and coaches operate without standardized systems
Competition opportunities are inconsistent at the local level
Athletes face significant drop-off after high school
Development pathways from recreational play to elite competition are unclear

ABA exists to address these challenges by strengthening the entire ecosystem—from grassroots participation to high-performance development—through deliberate investment in people, systems, and opportunity.

Guiding Principles

Badminton First

Decisions are made in the long-term interest of the sport and its community.

Enable, Don't Replace

ABA empowers clubs, organizers, and coaches to execute successfully within their own communities.

Participation Drives Excellence

Broad, consistent engagement creates the foundation for sustainable high-performance success.

Access Over Exclusivity

Opportunities to play, compete, and develop should not be limited by geography or income.

Quiet Competence

ABA prioritizes results, reliability, and trust over visibility or recognition.

ABA's Operating Focus

ABA prioritizes clubs and organizers as its primary beneficiaries, recognizing them as the key drivers of participation, engagement, and long-term growth. By strengthening clubs and enabling organizers, ABA creates a self-reinforcing ecosystem that benefits players, coaches, parents, and communities alike.

The ABA Growth Model

ABA's approach is built on a simple, scalable cycle:

1
Enable Clubs and Organizers

Provide tools, mentorship, standards, and systems that make it easier to host events, leagues, and programs.

2
Increase Local Activity

Support weekly rated play, weekly local leagues, and regular small-scale sanctioned tournaments.

3
Build Participation Density and Data

Create consistent engagement, meaningful ratings, and reliable competition pathways.

4
Generate Grassroots Surplus

Sustain operations through software subscriptions, event support, consulting services, and memberships.

5
Reinvest Into Development

Fund coaching education, organizer training, and athlete development initiatives.

6
Support High-Performance Pathways

Maintain a National Training Academy where internationally aspiring athletes can train full-time in a merit-based environment.

This model ensures that elite success is supported by a broad and healthy grassroots base, rather than relying on pay-to-play structures.

Leadership and Governance

ABA is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors and led by an Executive Director responsible for executing the organization's mission and strategy. Leadership is founder-led but institution-focused, ensuring continuity, accountability, and long-term sustainability beyond any single individual.

Closing Position

ABA is committed to building the infrastructure, talent, and systems necessary for badminton to thrive in the United States. By empowering local communities and investing in development at every level, ABA seeks to create a stronger, more connected, and more resilient future for the sport.
